Historical Locations

There are numerous Rochester area locations where “safe-houses” once sheltered fugitives awaiting boats or other modes of transportation to Canada. They traveled west from Syracuse area along routes that parallel today’s State highways 5 and 20. A web of routes snaked between the lakes and valleys south of Rochester. Farmers and storekeepers and preachers and keepers of mansions sent the runaways to Douglass, Amy and Isaac Post, Samuel Porter, Zion Church and to attics, barns, sail loft and cellars maintained by the lesser-known colleagues.
